Exhibit ‘dramatize’ integration thrust

CEBU, Philippines – The ongoing trade exhibit dubbed as “Exquisitely Filipino” for the Asia-Pacific Economic meetings here in Cebu is part of government’s efforts for small and medium enterprises to participate in the regional and global markets.

This was the message of APEC SOM3 Chairperson Laura del Rosario during the formal launch of the expanded exhibit the other night.

Del Rosario said the APEC Summit is an opportune time to launch the exhibit to dramatize APEC’s thrust of integrating and connecting economies and businesses.

Art has been part of the daily life of Cebuanos even before the 13th century during which they were engaged in what was called “Lukay Art,” a perishable art form which involved the weaving of coconut palm leaves.

It is believed that lukay has some religious and ritual origins and a testament to Cebuanos’ affinity with nature.

“This affinity can be seen in this exhibit wherein artist have transformed native raw material into export quality products. Where art played a role in ritual and religion in the past, it has now cross over to the economic growth these products are not merely a demonstration of the Filipinos skill and artistry. It has become a source of living for families, a realization of an artist dream to be recognized and of SMEs efforts to be part of the global market,” Del Rosario added.

Most of the exhibitors are members of the Philippine Export Confederation. The products on display showcase different aspects of the Philippines through bags, furniture, fashion accessories, gifts, housewares, and home decors.

The exhibit can be visited at SM Northwing.

Governor Hilario Davide III said Cebu has been a trading hub in South East Asia for the past 500 years as its location at the center of the Philippines gives it the advantage.

He added that Cebu’s handicrafts, fashion accessories, furniture, and clothes, to name a few, are in the homes in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

With the opening of the expanded Exquisitely Filipino trade exhibit, he said, “we once again have that perfect opportunity to showcase the best that Cebu can offer.”

“The quality and artistry of Cebu made products is something we can be proud of,” Davide said.

A fashion show dubbed Paradiso: The Resort Collection was also presented showcasing the collections of the members of the Fashion Council of Cebu. —/JMO (FREEMAN)
