Rain in Central Visayas expected to last until weekend

CEBU, Philippines- The rains Central Visayas experienced recently are due to a low pressure area.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration Visayas Director Oscar Tabada said light to moderate rains will continue until the end of the week due to the LPA.

He said that aside from the weather phenomenon, there is also the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which brings rains and isolated thunderstorms over the provinces of Cebu, Siquijor, and Bohol (particularly Balilihan, Antequera, Cortes, and Calape).

“Cloudy, sunny periods with light to moderate rains mostly in the afternoon or evening and light to moderate winds from southwest will prevail… This will last until weekend,” he said, adding that coastal waters will be “slightly moderate.”

He said that with maximum sustained winds of 15 kilometers per hour, the LPA was estimated at 390 kilometers east-southeast of Baler, Aurora (15.5°N, 125.2°E) yesterday.

The LPA, Tabada said, is unlikely to intensify into a typhoon, as it is already near the country’s landmass.

“Duol naman sa yuta so low ang possibility na mahimong cyclone na,” he said.

The weather bureau has forecasted two to four cyclones to enter the Philippine area of responsibility this month.

This, the public is advised to take precautionary measures against heavy rains, strong winds, lightning and possible flashfloods.

The general public and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils are also advised to monitor the next update to be incorporated in the Public Weather Forecast at 11:00 a.m. today.  (FREEMAN)
