Minor undergoes paraffin test to ensure no foul play

CEBU, Philippines - Despite being 100 percent convinced that no third party was involved in the incident involving an engineer who shot his girlfriend dead before killing himself Monday, homicide investigators still subjected to paraffin test a minor, who was in the room when the incident happened, to erase doubts of foul play.

The minor is the cousin of Engineer Meljohn Niel Olmedo, 28, who reportedly shot his girlfriend, Jennylyn Avila, 20, before committing suicide because of jealousy.

Senior Police Officer 4 Alex Dacua, homicide investigator, said that based on the physical evidence they have gathered from the crime scene, Olmedo appeared to have shot his girlfriend in the head before shooting himself.

But to dispel suspicions that the minor may have been involved in the killing, he was made to undergo the paraffin test to determine if he had fired a gun.

“Sa akoa lang nga analysis, walay foul play,” Dacua said.

Both Olmedo and Avila were found dead lying on the bed with the former’s left hand clutching the latter’s hair while his right hand holding the gun.

The minor who was with Olmedo and Avila in the room told the police that he was awakened by the second gunfire and saw his cousin and his girlfriend bloodied.

The parents of Olmedo said the two had been quarreling for the past few days after the boyfriend discovered that Avila was having an affair with another man. — (FREEMAN)
