Diner nabbed for paying fake money at an eatery
CEBU, Philippines - A man was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly paid fake P500 bill at an eatery in Alegria, Cebu.
Arrested was Loreto Sebastian, 44, who yielded more counterfeit P1,000 and P500 bills.
Sebastian, a former taxi driver, was identified by Leonilo Librando, 58, owner of Librando’s eatery where the suspect ate and paid the fake bill before boarding a passenger bus.
As per police investigation, Sebastian went to Librando’s eatery located in Barangay Poblacion, Alegria at past 10 a.m. and had his meal.
After getting the change of the P500 that he paid, he left and took the bus headed for Cebu City.
Librando noticed that the money the customer paid was a fake so he immediately called the police station.
Police officers then chased the passenger bus and flagged it down in front of Alegria Sports Complex.
Inside the bus, they found Sebastian whom Librando pointed as the same person who paid the fake P500 bill. The suspect was then placed under arrest.
The police recovered from the suspect three P1,000 bills placed inside a pack of cigarette, another P1,000 inside his wallet, and eight P500 bills inside another pack of cigarette. All bills were believed to be counterfeit.
The police further confiscated from the suspect at least P1,570 cash which they believed to be the suspect’s proceeds from selling fake money.
The suspect was brought to the police station where he confessed to have acquired the supply of fake bills from Cebu City.
He, however, denied knowing the supplier, saying he only communicates with him through mobile phone when he orders the fake bills. He further said he did not know where the fake bills are being manufactured or who manufactures them.
He told the police that he pays P100 for each fake P1,000 and P500 bill which he would collect at a designated place.
The police will file charges for violation of Article 168 of the Revised Penal Code or the possession of counterfeit Philippine currency against the suspect. (FREEMAN)
