Brgy officials urged to join convention

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Barangay Councilors League of the Philippines (BCLP) – Cebu City chapter will hold its first regional convention at Crown Regency Hotel in Lapu-Lapu City on April 17 to 19, 2015.

The event would kick off the series of conventions nationwide, said Kamputhaw barangay councilman Raymond Garcia, the chapter president and the BCLP vice president for the Visayas.

During the 888 News Forum at Marco Polo Plaza, Garcia called on barangay councilors all over the Visayas and even those in Mindanao to join the convention.

The speakers invited include officials from the Department of Budget and Management to discuss the government procurement law, which Garcia said is a common problem among barangays.

The Department of Interior and Local Government will also discuss the anti-red tape and juvenile justice law.

Garcia said the topic is very interesting because even lawyers like himself did not take the subject up in law school.

The Commission on Elections will also update barangay officials on the biometrics system, the Sangguniang Kabataan and the upcoming national elections in 2016.

Official from the Office of the Ombudsman will discuss the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for public officials.

Garcia said they have invited Senators Grace Poe, Alan Peter Cayetano, JV Ejercito and DILG Secretary Mar Roxas but the officials have yet to confirm their attendance. —(FREEMAN)
