Musical “sugat” on Easter Sunday in Brgy Guadalupe

CEBU, Philippines - People will get to witness again another musical performance of ‘Sugat sa Guadalupe’ on Easter Sunday.

This year, the re-enactment of the traditional meeting of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary has a theme: “Matam-is nga Kasakit.” It is directed by Aljin Abaquita.

Abaquita said they have focused on “simplified and detailed” play of scenes, which makes it distinct from the past year’s presentation.

The stage play, he considered as a vehicle of proclaiming a religious story, is not only set to amuse the spectators but also aims to move the faithful on reflecting themselves from the “powerful” characters depicted on the musical-drama production.

“Ang tuyo ug tumong niini nga mahimo siyang behikulo sa pagpalangyab, sa pagsangyaw sa pulong sa Ginoo nga gipaagi’g duwa sa entablado. Mao ra ang (gisunod) nga pagsuwat sa bibliya diin didto namo gibase ang mga preparasyon, diha ta maglainlain,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

“Ang tumong usab niini kay madungagan ang panudlanan o pundo alang sa kahumanan sa kumbento ang umaabot nga bag-ong kumbento sa Our Lady of Guadalupe of Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine,” he said during a press conference held at the unfinished convent.

Guadalupe Parish Council President Recardo de los Reyes said they were not able to complete the project due to lack of funds. The convent is 85-percent complete.

The stage presentation which has a cast of over 150 members, including the five main characters: Magdalena played by Shea Ira Panilagao; Judas, Romel Roseque; Herodes, Gleven Boiser; Pilato, Cerj Michael; Mary, Rutchell Borbajo; Risen Christ, Meljun Layos; and Jesus, Noel Jumao-as.

“Ang tumong sa pasundayag nga dili lang ka ma-amaze or dili lang ka ma-entertain, but it is also for you to learn from the values shown on stage, sa imong nakat-onan nga mausab ka,” he said, noting that it took them a week to prepare.

This year also introduces around seven original song compositions, which would be turned into an album.

“Mas gidetalye namo sa kun unsay tinuod nga gibati sa among karakter ug mas gi-simplify namo, nga mahubit sa labing sayon nga paaagi,” he concluded. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
