Sinkhole drains part of Badian river
CEBU, Philippines - Water from a river in Barangay Talayong, Badian town has flowed into a sinkhole in the riverbed, which was discovered on January 2 just days after tropical depression Seniang devastated southern Cebu.
Barangay Captain Floro Bijona said the sinkhole was found after residents in the area were surprised that part of the river in the vicinity of sitio Timba had drained. When they checked closer, a 10-feet-wide sinkhole was what greeted them.
“Nahibulong ang mga tawo kay ang tubig wala na moagi sa ubos petsa dos nagsugod. Sa pagsubay nila didto na nagsubay ang tubig sa sinkhole,” Bijona said.
Barangay Captain Bijona said the water now flows directly into the sinkhole. The water from the river comes from a spring upstream.
He added that the depth of the sinkhole could not be measured as of now and he requested the police to cordon the place for security reasons.
He said he will request the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Mines and Geosciences Bureau to check and evaluate the sinkhole.
“Nabalaka sila kung asa paingon ang tubig kay wala man mapuno ang tubig. Ipasusi nato ni sa DENR, aron masusi unsa ka delikado ang sinkhole,” Bijona added.
In Badian alone, two sinkholes were found after tropical repression Seniang and another was found in Alcantara town. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau are now monitoring the sinkholes. (FREEMAN)
