LPA less likely to become cyclone

CEBU, Philippines - The low pressure area spotted East of Guiuan, Eastern Samar will have a less chance of becoming a tropical cyclone but the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said it would still bring occasional heavy rains in Eastern Visayas.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, PAGASA spotted the LPA some 170 kilometers East of Guiuan.

The rest of Visayas including Cebu and Central Visayas as well as Bicol Region and the provinces of Quezon, Marinduque and Romblon will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

PAGASA Visayas Director Oscar Tabada earlier forecast a cloudy weekend.

Sailors and fishermen are likewise forewarned that sea condition in Visayas and Luzon areas will be moderate to rough.

At least one more tropical cyclone is expected to enter the country as forecast by authorities.

Eastern Visayas and northern Cebu have yet to fully recover from the wrath of typhoon Ruby that struck last weekend as relief efforts continue to be carried out.

Cebu is the relief hub in the Visayas region where packing of family food packs to affected residents is being done in three locations in Cebu City.

So far, more than 40,000 packs have been distributed from Cebu through Air Force C130 aircraft and Navy vessel trips to families in affected local government units in northern Cebu while 18,000 others were brought to Eastern Visayas.

These same areas also suffered from the brunt of super typhoon Yolanda, which claimed thousands of lives in November last year.  (FREEMAN)
