Delayed justice isn’t really failure

CEBU, Philippines - Success in cases involving abuse of women and children is not only measured by the prosecution aspect but also in the aspect of aftercare, said the Provincial Women’s Commission. 

“Kung atong tan-awon ang epekto nga nahimo nato didto sa personalidad sa bata or sa babaye nga maong gi-abuse, atong nakita nga nakuha nato ang kadaogan,” said Hedda Largo, Gender and Development Officer at PWC.

She told reporters during the “Kapistorya” forum that the length of time in prosecuting cases can be challenging but they take consolation in the success of reintegrating victims back to the society.

“The children are now in school, they even dreamed of becoming professional someday, some want to be psychologist, teacher, social worker,” she said.

Capitol Information Officer Ethel Natera agrees.

“The fact nga natabangan ning mga bata psychologically and nakaabot ta sa korte, that’s the big accomplishment already,” she said.

She said that the provincial government funds for the education of the victims as well as the aftercare being provided by psychologists.

She disclosed that Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, the co-chairperson of PWC, is also coordinating with the national government for the construction of another “crisis facility” to shelter women and children who are victims of domestic violence and exploitation.

PWC further assured that assistance will be extended even to witnesses of abuse, a vital factor in the successful prosecution of cases. 

“Kung moguwa lang sila, naa ta ang PWC magpaluyo kanila ug maghatag sa serbisyo unsa’y kinahanglan,” she said.  (FREEMAN)
