Man arrested by NBI for drugs charged in court

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office has charged in court Roberto “Gringo” Escopete, the man arrested with shabu worth P20,000 during an operation of the National Bureau of Investigation last Thursday.

The charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act were elevated to court yesterday after Escopete manifested during the inquest proceedings that he would rather answer the accusations in court and not at the prosecutor’s level.

At around 10 a.m. last Thursday, NBI agents led by Supervising Agent Rey Villordon searched Escopete’s house in Sitio Mahayahay, Calamba, Cebu City by virtue of a warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Wilfredo Navarro. The search yielded 5.0964 grams of illegal drugs.

Escopete denied owning the seized substance, saying it was planted.

Villordon said they also implemented another search warrant against Escopete’s neighbor, Niño Ramas.

The subject was not at his residence at that time but Villordon said they still recovered two firearms from the house. Charges for illegal possession of firearms will be filed against Ramas next week. — Mylen P. Manto/JMO (FREEMAN)
