CEBU, Philippines - One died and two others were injured in separate vehicular accidents in two days in Cebu province.

The first incident happened in barangay Sangat, San Fernando town, after a mini-bus hit Francisco Sanchez, 27, collector, of Casuntingan, Mandaue City while he was driving his motorcycle last Saturday.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Minglanilla District Hospital.  Mini-bus Marino Calago, 32, of Barangay Tubod, Dumanjug town, is currently detained at the San Fernando Police Station.

SPO2 Victor Cueno, San Fernando police desk officer, said Sanchez was heading towards Cebu City while the mini-bus was traveling on the opposite direction when the incident happened around 7 p.m.

Based on initial investigation, Sanchez was allegedly driving fast and was overtaking when he swerved to the opposite lane and collided head-on with the mini-bus.

Sanchez was thrown off his motorcycle and landed hard on the concrete, suffering severe injuries to the body. Responding authorities rushed him to the Minglanilla District Hospital but he died along the way.

Calago would be facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and damage to properties.

Meanwhile, in nearby City of Naga, two people were lucky enough to walk with slight injuries after a delivery wing van hit their Toyota Innova yesterday afternoon during a heavy rain.

Barangay Uling resident Nicolas Paran said he was seated on a bamboo bench outside his sari-sari store by the side of the road 1 p.m. when he heard a screeching sound.

When he checked he saw the wing van, which going downhill for Cebu City, swerving back to its lane as it encountered the Innova, which was heading towards Toledo City, on the opposite lane.

“Nikawat man na siya sa dalan.  Pagkakita niya nga naay sugat gikabig niya ang manobela, nababag ang wing van sa tunga sa dalan. Ang lubot sa van maoy naka-igo sa atubangan sa Innova, ang atubangan naa sa railing) (The van encroached into the opposite lane. When he encountered the Innova, the driver tried to return to his lane, causing the van to pivot, and in the process hit the Innova with its rear end),” Paran said.

He said he immediately rushed to help the victims and minutes later the police came to respond to the alarm. Despite the damage to their vehicle, the victims opted to settle the matter amicably.  (FREEMAN)
