‘No plate, no run’ starting Oct. 16

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Land Transportation Office-7 reminded vehicle owners and dealers of  cars and motorcycles with no official motor vehicle plate numbers to get their pre-assigned vehicle plates before October 16, 2014 as the agency will start implementing the “No Plate, No Run” policy on that day.

LTO-7 Regional Director Arnel Tancinco said they will be strictly implementing the policy considering that the deadline is set by President Benigno Aquino III.

Tancinco said during the AGIO Forum yesterday that a total of 14,983 plates for four-wheeled vehicles and 26,000 plates for motorcycles already arrived at their office.

“All these plate numbers were already pre-assigned. Vehicle owners or dealers can get them at our office,” said Tancinco.

These motor vehicle plate numbers are for vehicles that were registered from early February to end of September of this year.

Tancinco said cars or motorcycles found to have no vehicle plate numbers after October 16 will be fined P5,000.

But Tancinco said vehicles that were registered at their licensing centers in Lapu-Lapu City and in Bais City, Negros Oriental are exempted from the October 16 deadline.

“These two licensing centers have submitted inaccurate plate monitoring documents. So if your vehicle is registered in these two centers, the owner will not be penalized until the issue is resolved. Anyway, if the vehicle is registered, makita man na,” Tancinco said.

Tancinco added that owners of a vehicle with a brandname of Chevrolet, Nissan, Ford and BMW are also exempted from the deadline since the modern and standard plate design is not compatible with these types of vehicle.

According to the Department of Transportation and Communication, the modern license plates are designed to halt the propagation of tampered or fake license plates as  they contain  several advanced security features and a new alpha-numeric design. — (FREEMAN)
