DSWD: Family from Bohol is third best in country

Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Central Visayas’ bet for the nationwide search for Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya 2014 ranked third in yesterday’s declaration of winners by the Department of Social Welfare and Development central office.

The Ewican family from Alegria, Bohol, bested 14 other entries from different regions in the country.

Genaro and Wilma Ewican received P10,000 and a certificate.

The couple was chosen as the Huwarang Pantawid Pamilya for the regional level early this month. They competed among 40 others before they represented the region in the national level.

The Ewican family managed to survive their daily needs while providing for other expenses using the cash aid provided by DSWD as beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Utilizing the P4,000 cash assistance under the program, the couple managed to have a backyard garden, as well as operate a small production of recycled decorations.

The couple’s aim to provide education for their children prompted them to join the 4Ps program in 2011.  Under the program, high school students receive P500 each month while elementary students receive P300 each.

Also, Norma’s active involvement in her children’s school and in community activities led to her victory as a barangay councilor and is currently the chairman of the Health and Sanitation Committee.  Yesterday around 5,000 beneficiaries of the 4Ps of the DSWD-7 participated in the National Family Day  at the Plaza Independencia.

Most of the beneficiaries of the program in Cebu are from the urbanized cities of Talisay, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Cebu.   (FREEMAN)
