CUSW cites lack of care why trees do not survive
CEBU, Philippines - There is a need to maintain trees so they would survive and not wither, become diseased, or get attacked by pests and die.
Architect Socorro Atega, Cebu Uniting for Sustainable Water executive director, said people assume that seedlings would grow to become trees even without maintenance after planting them.
They are wrong.
“For me, wa ta’y pagtan-aw sa (we do not do) maintenance sa trees. We just assumed they can grow without watering. We don’t care about this,” Atega said.
“Mao nang nahitabo atong nag-decay (Trees decay) because in pruning kinahanglan nga pintorahan na nimo (them we need to paint the exposed portion). That (paint) is something that will seal the opening to prevent infestation of pest. Wala na nga (That is not our) practice,” she added.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the country has set the other day a new world record for most trees planted in an hour.
An estimated 3.4 millions of cacao, coffee, and rubber tree seedlings were planted in six different areas in Mindanao by some 160,000 government employees, students, and volunteers.
While there is no official announcement yet, as Guiness World Record certification takes weeks, national environment officials were confident the country broke India’s record of 1.9 million trees made August 15, 2011. (FREEMAN)
