CEBU, Philippines - To strengthen and enhance security, an integrated command center was created to promote and sustain peace and order in at least six barangays in Cebu City.

The center, named GSG6/6, will be supervised by officials of Barangays Calamba, Suba, Pasil, Sawang Calero, San Nicolas Proper and Pahina San Nicolas in coordination with Police Station 6.

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed last month by the barangays and police station “to consolidate their efforts and resources to enhance the promotion of peace and order in the city” in accordance with the Local Government Code.

The Local Government Code provides that barangays can group together and agree among themselves how to better serve the public.  Based on the MOA, the GSG6/6 is required to have a law enforcement team composing of one tanod each barangay and at least two police officers to conduct police visibility patrol in crime prone areas.

The barangays are also expected to provide mobility, monitoring, communications and manpower to the partnered police station “for the efficient, effective and coordinated maintenance of peace and order.”

Installation of surveillance cameras at strategic locations within the barangays are a requisite in promoting peace and order and deter criminalities.

The Department of Interior and Local Government and City Council have been furnished a copy of the agreement.

Councilor Gerardo Carillo, who pushed for the creation of the center said the consolidated described the agreement as a “bayanihan spirit or cooperativism.”

“Bayanihan spirit, which is inherent to our Filipino culture, is being demonstrated and already undertaken by six barangays to consolidate and coordinate their efforts, service and resources to promote and sustain peace and order within their respective jurisdiction…” he said.  (FREEMAN)
