Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education-7 claimed it is now 75 percent ready for the implementation of the senior high school program in 2016.

Dr. Carmelita Dulangon, DepEd-7 director, said the different divisions have tied up with several stakeholders, including local government units and private sectors, to help them achieve success in the K to 12 program.

“We are done having advocacy and orientation sa mga teachers and linked with different non-government organizations,” Dulangon told The FREEMAN.

Several companies also agreed to accommodate senior high students for on-the-job training. “In Lapu-Lapu City, MEPZ companies are willing to accommodate our students there…also in Tsuneishi in Balamban town…and there is a lot in Bohol to be donated for school building,” Dulangon said.

She said an education summit is also underway.

DepEd Cebu City Schools Division said it needs P307 million to implement the senior high school levels prompting the officials to ask assistance from the city government.

Aside from the financial requirement, it also needs 241 classrooms, 395 teachers, around 9,472 armchairs and laboratories.

Dulangon admitted that other divisions need more than what Cebu City Division needs but she is positive that the LGUs and other stakeholders would back them up.

DepEd believes that through K to 12 program our graduates would be globally competitive. Under the curriculum, specialized subjects like technical-vocational and livelihood skills, sports, arts and design are included.

K to 12 is a program that covers kindergarten to 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop life-long learners  and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.  (FREEMAN)
