Wall collapse kills worker

CEBU, Philippines - A construction worker was pinned to death when a concrete wall of a university collapsed during heavy rains last night in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.  

Rescuers from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation and City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council identified the fatality as Ronel Suson, 24, a native of Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental.

Suson who was trapped under the rubbles for almost two hours before rescuers found his body. Heavy downpour  reportedly hampered effort to immediately rescue him.

According to TV5-Cebu reporter Ryan Sorote, who was at the scene during the operation, Suson’s body was immediately wrapped with cloth after it was extracted from the mud.

Around 7 p.m., the victim and ten other workers were digging to make a ‘shoring’ to support the soil near the wall of the University of Cebu-Mambaling Campus when the incident happened.

Reports said Suson and his co-workers scrambled for safety but his legs were stuck in the mud. —(FREEMAN)
