Organizers promise grand ‘Kaplag’

CEBU, Philippines - A grand celebration and reenactment are expected for the 450th anniversary of Kaplag or the finding of the image of Sto. Nino in Cebu come April 2015.

“This will be a different activity because we will have the reenactment of significant scenes like the arrival of galleon ship that brought the evangelizers. We plan to have it at the Malacañang sa Sugbo, the actual site of Magellan’s Cross erection,” said choreographer Val San Diego, head of the reenactment committee.

San Diego said around 1,000 performers will be needed for the huge production.

Farther Harold Rentoria, executive director of the Kaplag 2015 working committee, said funding for the 450th celebration will come from National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

He said they have invited Pope Francis to the event but are aware that the Holy Father will already be in the country in January to visit victims of calamities.

“Dako kaayo ang pagtuo ug pagsalig sa mga Sugbuanon ug mga Pilipino kang Sr. Sto. Niño so I don’t think maapektaran sa visit ni Pope ug sa Sinulog ang Kaplag,” explained Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino de Cebu rector Father Jonas Mejares.

In line with the milestone activity, an international conference will be held to discuss thoroughly the historical significance of Kaplag and other key aspects of evangelization in the Philippines. – (FREEMAN)
