Man in bicycle dies in road accident

Bryner L. Diaz - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A man died after a sports utility vehicle hit him yesterday morning while riding a bicycle at S. Osmeña Avenue in Barangay Mabolo.

Jonas Inoc, of Getafe, Bohol, was declared dead by the responding personnel of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation at past 7 a.m. because of severe head injuries.

Inoc came from the public market in Mandaue City where he bought meat. He was on his way back to Pasil where he works at a carenderia when a Mitsubishi Montero driven by Arnold Najera, 47, of Dumlog, Talisay City, hit him. Najera did not notice Inoc when he suddenly changed lane.

Traffic Investigator Edgar Baton said the victim was hit from behind and was thrown off his bicycle because of the impact. Baton said they were able to identify the victim because of the call from his mother in his cellphone.

According to Baton, they told the mother about the accident but failed to tell her that her son was already dead.

Najera voluntarily surrendered and is now under police custody including his car.

Traffic investigators are waiting for the family of the victim to press charges against the driver.  (FREEMAN)
