2 dead, 1 injured in road mishap

CEBU, Philippines -  Two men died and another was injured when  a six-wheeler truck hit a motorcycle on the national highway of Barangay Magdugo, Toledo City Tuesday morning.

The fatality was identified as Marvin Laspoña, 19, driver of the Rusi motorcycle bearing a plate number of 7042-XX who was declared dead on arrival at Toledo City Hospital.

The back riders were Dave Habasan, 20, who was rushed to Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital but was declared dead hours after and Jeffrey Hagupan, 20, who got injured. All three are residents of Toledo.

Upon the initial investigation led by Police Officer 3 Cris Gako, the motorcycle was travelling fast on the left side of the road heading towards Toledo proper.

Suddenly the truck plated GRD-217driven by Tapil Leonel Vellaneza, 21, resident of Barangay Casili, Mandaue City, made a left turn upon reaching the place resulting to the clash.

“Padung na unta ni mogarahe ang truck apan sa pag-left turn niini, mao usab ang pag-agi sa motor mao tong nagkabangga ang duha,” said Senior Police Officer 4 Alan Barquin, chief of traffic in Toledo.

The motorcycle together with Marvin and Dave pinned under the truck.

The police disclosed that the driver of the motorcycle didn’t have a driver’s license.

Meanwhile, Vellaneza immediately surrendered himself to Toledo Police Station after the incident but will be released because of the settlement of the victim’s family and the owner of the said truck.

“Nakig-settle naman ang tag-iya sa hardware nga gitrabaho-an ani sa suspek. Matod pa nila nga willing sila mogasto sa mga expenses,”said Barquin.

Meanwhile, an uprooted old Acacia tree yesterday fell over a passing dump truck hurting two persons along the national road of Barangay Balud, San Fernando.

The driver of the hauler truck with a plate number WQV-742 was injured while his porter who was identified as “Bengie” was hit on his head.

Both driver and his porter were immediately brought to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

Upon the initial investigation of the San Fernando police, the acacia tree was said to be very old causing it to be uprooted, falling on and blocking the road together with the concrete electric posts.

Prior to the incident, residents of the place already complained about the old acacia tree because it might cause danger but none of the officials reportedly made an action.

The incident caused heavy traffic yesterday.  (FREEMAN)
