DENR conducts environment forums for students in CV

CEBU, Philippines - As part of the celebration of the Environment Month, a series of forums on environmental protection were held in three provinces of Central Visayas to increase the awareness of the public on environment concerns.

The Environmental Stewardship forums, spearheaded by the Department of Environment, were done in three universities to further strengthen the environment information, education and communication campaign in the region.

The forums were held in Negros Oriental State University Guihulngan, Negros Oriental campus last June 18, Bohol Island State University Main Campus the following day, and Cebu Technological University Argao Campus on June 19.

DENR-7 Regional Executive Director Isabelo Montejo said that holding these kinds of activities is very important to inculcate to the youth the environmental programs of the national government.

“This is to provide an opportunity to present and discuss about DENR programs and projects specifically in addressing climate change, national greening program, biodiversity protection and environmental citizenship to a number of students and members of the faculty,” said Montejo.

Montejo cited that this approach would help convey to the academe the seriousness in protecting the environment with the enthusiasm of the youth.

Montejo led a pool of speakers with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officers (PENROs) in Bohol, Negros Oriental and Cebu.

The discussions lasted for three hours with open forums giving the students the opportunity to ask questions.

“Our biggest partner in environmental protection and conservation is our youth and we count on them as they have the passion and eagerness,” Montejo concluded.

The month of June is annually observed as Environment Month.  (FREEMAN)
