Driver charged for the death of 2 casino workers

CEBU, Philippines -  Finding probable cause, the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office indicted a man for the death of two casino workers whom he hit while driving a government-issued vehicle on Saturday.

Assistant City Prosecutor Rhodora Bacatan has elevated to court the criminal case for reckless imprudence resulting in double homicide against Gerard dela Cruz, 26, a resident of Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City.

During inquest proceeding, dela Cruz opted not to undergo preliminary investigation and manifested to answer the case in court.

Bacatan recommended P30,000 bail for dela Cruz’ temporary liberty.

Dela Cruz was driving a car issued by Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation  to his father along Salinas Drive, Barangay Apas, Cebu City when the incident happened early morning on April 5.

He was on his way to fetch his father when he hit Gaudioso Bontilao of Balamban and Joselito Lopez of Capitol Site, Cebu City who were riding a motorcycle. The victims died on the spot.

Bontilao and Lopez were employees of PAGCOR as slot machine operators assigned at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Barangay Lahug where dela Cruz’ father is also working.

Aside from the two, Dany Vale, 37, a pedestrian was also injured during the incident.

Dela Cruz reportedly admitted driving under the influence of liquor to traffic investigators.

While driving, Dela Cruz reportedly fell asleep, prompting his vehicle to swerve to the opposite lane of the road and hit the victims.  (FREEMAN)
