CEBU, Philippines - To promote health and support the hobbies of adults, the Cebu City government has allocated nearly half a million pesos for the procurement of sports equipment and supplies.

These will be distributed to different barangays in the city for adults who have organized themselves to play lawn tennis and a two-player variation of volleyball locally known as “dayun-dayun.”

“In today’s society that is moving towards a more sedentary lifestyle, the importance of physical fitness cannot be emphasized enough,” said Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., the proponent.

Throughout adulthood, Gabuya emphasized, is one of the most important times to maintain an exercise regimen.

Playing volleyball and lawn tennis can contribute to their physical fitness, he said.

The councilor cited Section 16 of  the Local Government Code of 1991 which provides that every local government unit shall ensure and support, among other things, the preservation and enrichment of culture, promote health and safety.

“For these organized volleyball ‘dayun-dayun’ and lawn tennis teams to continue and be successful, the City has to allocate for their equipment and supplies,” said Gabuya.

The City Council recently approved the amount of P495,660 as budget for the purchase of the sports supplies.

The amount will be charged against Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) funds, which, as per guidelines, shall be utilized for projects connected with the delivery of basic health services.

Of  the amount, P232,560 will be spent for 34 lawn tennis balls; P105,000 for 30 lawn tennis nets; P127,500 for 1,700 volleyball balls; and P30,600 for 68 volleyball nets. —/GMR (FREEMAN)
