Police to look into CCTV issue

Grace Melanie L. Lacamiento - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Chief Supt. Danilo Constantino, Police Regional Office-7 director, will instruct the Intelligence Division to check if the closed-circuit television cameras installed in public places are indeed being used by unlawful elements.

Last Wednesday, Councilor Dave Tumulak proposed to regulate the installation of CCTVs that may be used for “illegal motives” such as to monitor police movements.

Constantino said that criminal gangs may have already studied and familiarized the locations of  these CCTVs, thus avoiding being caught.

He said that criminal gangs may use smartphones and other gadgets with the advent of technology at present.

Earlier, Tumulak said that the City’s Disaster Office received reports of several “unauthorized CCTV cameras being installed on the electric posts of Visayan Electric Company and telecommunication companies along the streets of two barangays in this city.”

Some members of  the Cebu City Council, however, questioned the proposed amendment.

The proposal is subjected for further evaluation.  —/JMD (FREEMAN)
