2 city execs to attend waste mgt workshop in Indonesia

CEBU, Philippines - Two Cebu City officials will attend an international workshop on mitigating short-lived climate pollutants which will be held in Surabaya, Indonesia on February 23 to 24.

The workshop, organized by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment in Japan, will tackle municipal context solid waste management.

“It will apply based on the present set up diri sa city. In this fast growing city, we have to prepare,” said Councilor Dave Tumulak, one of  the Cebu City representatives for the event. He will be joined by Councilor Nida Cabrera.

In a letter sent to Tumulak, Kazuya Kumagai, director of the Office of Sound Material-Cycle Society Waste Management and Recycling Department Ministry of the Environment in Japan, said that cities play a central role in providing waste services to residents, and confronting the complex challenges of managing municipal solid waste. 

“As the population and income growth rates conti-nue to accelerate in Asia’s urban areas, municipal solid waste is becoming increasingly challenging to cope with, and finding solutions to ma-nage the waste problem increasingly important,” Kumagai said.

CAC conduct this program to support the cities in their campaign to lessen the short-lived climate pollutants or SLCPs from the waste sector and develop sustainable municipal solid waste practices.

Kumagai added that the expected outcome of the meeting is to continuously improve the cities’ action in solid waste management.  (FREEMAN)
