‘Soldier’ posts no bail

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Danao City Prosecutor's Office has recommended no bail against a man, who claims to be a soldier for illegal possession of firearms.

Accused Somala Marohombsar opted not to file counter-affidavit to the allegation filed against him.

This prompted the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to turn over the accused to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Danao City.

Marohombsar, 43, a resident of Quezon City and a native of Lanao del Norte, was arrested by the CIDG-7 team led by Police Chief Inspector Rene Kyamko in Cogon, Danao City on January 24, 2014 for having in possession of several unlicensed firearms, including an M16 assault rifle.

He was charged of a criminal case for violation of Republic Act 10591 otherwise known as Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act before the court.

Inquest Prosecutor Jose Dionisio Kyamko recommended no bail against Marohombsar.

The team was supposed to serve an arrest warrant in the area when they chanced Marohombsar carrying a backpack with firearm protruding outside.

The CIDG-7 seized M16 rifle and a magazine loaded with four live ammunitions and three caliber .9mm Black Widow revolvers and .9mm Beretta pistol.

Upon interrogation, Marohombsar failed to show documents that would prove that he was authorized to possess the said firearms.

He instead claimed to be a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assigned in Luzon.

Kyamko however, said that based on their verification, Marohombsar was not a member of AFP. (FREEMAN)
