Early enrollment for public schools start this Saturday

Melissa Q. Cabahug - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  While classes for school year 2013 to 2014 are still ongoing, elementary and secondary public schools all over the region are already bracing for the start of the early enrollment this Saturday for next school year.

Department of Education (DepEd-7) Regional Director Carmelita Dulangon, in an interview with The Freeman, said that the early enrollment strategy was implemented nationwide so that schools, as well as teachers, are well prepared for the next school year.

She added that the early enrollment, which is already on its fifth year since it was implemented, helps parents prepare to avoid experiencing scarcity of books and chairs as their children start classes on June this year.

“We need to educate the parents, persuade them and convince them. Ang purpose ini kay maka pa-ready pod sa mga eskwelahan and if parents just come on the first day of classes, problems may arise like wala nay kalingkoran ilang mga anak, wala nay libro kay nahatag na sa mga nag-una’g pa-enroll or magkulang og libro ang maestro kay wa man makita daan nga daghan diay ang enrollees in this school,” Dulangon said.

Further, Dulangon said that the nationwide early registration strategy of DepEd is very helpful for schools, to pre-determine materials they lack.

“Strategies adopted have been very helpful in giving us inputs on exactly how many classrooms to expect, the furniture whether we have enough or we used to prepare more based on the enrollees on the enrollment data and also for the teachers, we would know just how many teachers will be assigned to a particular school based on the enrollment data. Amo ning’ hinay-hinayan ning kulturaha,” she explained.

All public schools in the region are ready for the enrollment this Saturday, stated Dulangon.

“All the schools’ division superintendents have already informed the parents of the school children that we will have the early enrollment this Saturday. Some superintendents like Dr. Riyamar Angtod of Cebu City made announcements through TV and radio,” she said.

Dr. Joelyza Arcilla, Principal IV of Lahug Elementary School said that the early enrollment strategy of DepEd is very good.

“Very advantageous because by this, we will be able to know the needs of the school and at the same time, it is a sort of information drive to the parents because we really have problems regarding enrollment,” Arcilla said.

She added that all teachers and staff of Lahug Elementary School are 80 percent ready for this Saturday.

“We are actually prepared because this is a yearly activity. In fact, we have already hanged our tarpaulins around the school premises for the information of everybody,” she said, adding that the remaining 20 percent of their preparation, concerns the reproduction of necessary enrollment forms at the same time preparing the venue for the enrollment.
