DOH reminds devotees on health hazards

CEBU, Philippines - Health authorities are reminding devotees to be extra cautious when participating in Sinulog activities to prevent medical emergencies. 

Health Emergency Management Staff (HEMS) chief Dr. Expedito Medalle is discouraging the elderly and the sick in participating in the solemn procession this coming Saturday, especially with the unpleasant weather condition.

"But if they really wanted to join as part of their devotion, they have to see to it that they bring their maintenance medicines. Also, they must be with somebody stronger than them to assist them during the activity," Medalle said.

The Department of Health (DOH)-7 official further cautioned the public on purchasing street food along the grand parade route.

"It will be better that they eat first in their homes or bring food cooked at home. We cannot regulate and monitor every food stall during the Sinulog so we are never sure how these are being prepared," Medalle stressed.

Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the DOH-7 is also reminding those who are down with viral diseases to stay at home to avoid spreading the virus during Sinulog.

"We are closely monitoring airborne diseases. Our tip is very simple and easy to follow. If ever one manifests of fever, cough, colds, rash, conjunctivitis, they must stay at home and not go around to prevent spread. If it has been days, they should see a doctor and then return home to rest," RESU chief Rennan Cimafranca said.

Rehydration and rain gears are also advised as must-bring items when going out and when joining religious and other Sinulog-related activities.

Meanwhile, RESU is currently monitoring suspected typhoid fever cases in Danao City.

Cimafranca said local health officials from Danao City noted more than 20 cases in Barangay Oguis.

"The Danao City Health Office recorded 21 cases in Barangay Oguis. They already visited the mountain barangay and found that the community water source is a shallow well which could have contributed to them getting sick," the RESU chief said.

Of the 21 cases, seven were admitted at the Danao Provincial Hospital but were already discharged after being treated.

DOH-7 has sent one container of chlorine to disinfect the water source. No confirmatory laboratory tests were conducted but three of the seven admitted tested positive in rapid testing conducted by hospital medical personnel. (FREEMAN)
