For three months Buhisan dam desilting February

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Buhisan dam will undergo “desilting” for three months starting next month to remove around 50,000 cubic meters of mud.

Ernesto Delco, Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) assistant manager for operation, said that task would be done manually that it may even take more than three months.

“Possible nga musobra pa sa (that it may last for more than) three months kay daghan pa na og lapok nga mura og lugaw ang mahabilin ana (because of the amount of mud),” he told The FREEMAN yesterday.

Delco, though, assured that there would be no water shortage in its franchise area even when desilting would be ongoing.

The dam has a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters and a production capacity of 10,000 cubic meters per day.

He said MCWD have other sources, which includes their Jaclupan wells that has a capacity of 33,000 cubic meters per day and other wells located in Talamban, Cebu City; and in the towns of Consolacion and Liloan.

“Bisan pa sa (Even with the) desilting sa Buhisan dam, we still have plenty of water reserves. So, wala ni epekto sa atong (this has no effect in our) water supply,” Delco added.

The Buhisan dam currently supplies only about 3,000 cubic meters per day, which is expected to go down to 2,000 cubic meters once desilting would commence.

MCWD produces about 204,000 cubic meter daily to its 160,000 customers.  (FREEMAN)
