Farmer stabs drinking buddy dead

CEBU, Philippines - What was supposed to be a happy occasion turned bloody when a farmer stabbed dead his companion while they were a drinking last Friday evening in Barangay Togonon, Danao City.

The suspect, Dionesio Cawasi, 26, of Sitio Lamac, reportedly grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed his friend Lucinio Lawas, 27, also a farmer, in different parts of the body.

Lawas suffered several stab wounds which caused his quick death.

PO2 Rosello Campo, desk officer, said Lawas was with his friends coming from a cockfighting arena when Cawasi saw them. Cawasi invited them for a few drinks in his house where the crime happened.

The suspect and victim were in the middle of their drinking when Cawasi suddenly grabbed the weapon and stabbed Lawas repeatedly.

"Wa man kuno sila gaaway, wa pud silay panagbangi kay amigo kuno sila pero napanglimutan na kuno siya," Campo said in a phone interview.

The friends of the two tried to stop Cawasi but it was too late to save Lawas.

"Hasta man pud kuno sila (friends) nakalitan kay hubog na pud lagi unya kalit lang nanunggab (Cawasi)," Campo said.

Lawas was no longer taken to the hospital while Cawasi voluntarily surrendered to the police right after the incident.

Police said they will be filing a murder case against Cawasi, who is now detained at the police stockade, after the family of the victim refused to amicably settle the incident.  (FREEMAN)
