Sinkhole found in Ronda as Yolanda exits

CEBU, Philippines - A sinkhole appeared yesterday in Ronda, southwestern town of Cebu, shortly after the strong downpour of rain and strong winds, brought by super typhoon “Yolanda,” stopped.

Ronda Vice Mayor Jonnah John Ungab said the sinkhole was discovered by a farmer in Barangay Palanas yesterday, around 6 in the morning.

Ungab told The Freeman that residents living near the area where the sinkhole is located heard a “loud splash” Friday Night but did not mind it since they thought it was just caused by the typhoon.

The farmer who saw the sinkhole the next day immediately reported it to the barangay captain.

Ungab said no one was reported hurt when the land collapsed forming the sinkhole.

“It’s a corn land so no houses nearby,” said Ungab, but he added that it has now been fenced with bamboo and has also been cordoned.

No experts from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have checked the sinkhole yet as of press time.

Further, Ungab said apart from damage in residences and agricultural land, no one was reported hurt due to the typhoon and power supply has been restored yesterday. (FREEMAN)
