Road mishap leaves woman dead, two hurt in Naga City

Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A woman died while two men were injured when their motorcycle figured in an accident in Barangay Lutac, City of Naga, Cebu Saturday noon.

Police identified the fatality as Elizabeth Gonzales, 55, and the injured as her husband Antonio Gonzales, 58, and relative Alex Mautos. The three are residents of Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.

According to the City of Naga police, the Gonzales couple was riding a red Honda motorcycle driven by Mautos for Cebu City when the accident happened at 12:30 pm.

The three came from somewhere in southern Cebu for the observance of All Souls’ Day that day and were headed home.

The police said Mautos tried to overtake a yellow Suzuki multicab (JDY 760) but miscalculated and hit its left portion instead.

Romeo Dayagonon, 75, of Barangay Balirong, City of Naga was the one driving the multicab, which was bound for the city proper.

As a result, Mautos lost control of the motorcycle and they all fell down at the other lane.

While this happened, a white Suzuki multicab (GVZ 476) was also fast approaching from the opposite direction.

Its driver, Franco Adlawan, 62, of Barangay West Poblacion, City of Naga, immediately maneuvered to the left to avoid hitting the victims, who were still recovering on the road.

However, the right portion of the bumper of Adlawan’s multicab still caught Elizabeth’s head.

The victims were rushed to the South General Hospital but Elizabeth, who lost her teeth due to the impact, succumbed to her head injuries.

Both Dayaganon and Adlawan were placed under custody by the City of Naga police immediately after the accident.

They, however, were released around 4 p.m. that day after settling the matter with the surviving victims, who reportedly admitted to be the ones at fault.  (FREEMAN)
