NFA says: “No rice shortage”

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The National Food Authority-7 assured that there is no shortage in the supply of rice for the region, whether commercial, NFA or well-milled rice.

“Wala man ta shortage (rice supply). Nag-start na man gani ang harvest,” said NFA-7 regional information officer Lucy Rosales in an interview with The Freeman yesterday as reports developed that some rice consumers observed the lack of supply of commercial rice in some grocery stores.

“It is not nga nag decline ang supply. Pag fast approaching na ang Christmas, mura ug mo menos ang supply. But in fact, harvest season na ta,” Rosales explained.

NFA rice is still sold at P27 per kilo while well-milled rice (middle rice) is sold at P32 per kilo.

NFA-7 has been distributing well-milled rice in major markets in Cebu City since August.

The food agency introduced well-milled rice to provide the public the opportunity to buy rice of higher quality but at an affordable rate as compared to commercial rice varieties that are currently sold in the market.

About 1,052,000 bags of Vietnam rice arrived in Cebu City last August in staggered shipments as part of the 2013 rice importation by the government. –(FREEMAN)
