Rains cause flooding in downtown area

Jessa Agua - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Once again, the downtown area of Cebu City was flooded after a heavy downpour at noontime yesterday.

The flood rose up to knee level along the streets of Bonifacio, Zapatera, Lopez Jaena, Junquera and Sanciangko.

The Imus road was not passable for a few minutes due to the floods.

Ankle-deep flooding was experienced along P. Del Rosario near Sto. Rosario Parish Church.

According to City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) operations head Joy Tumulak, the effect on the traffic flow was still felt a few hours after the rain.

“Traffic flow in Barangay T. Padilla near the market all the way to M.J. Cuenco was affected since water reached almost knee-level,” Tumulak told reporters.

A downtown mall placed two levels of sandbags near its entrance to protect its ground floor from flood water.

“The mall management has standby sandbags for the rainy season especially that there is a creek behind them that overspills during heavy rains,” Tumulak added.

When Tumulak and his team went to check Mahiga, T. Padilla and Tejero creeks yesterday noon, these were about to overflow but subsided when the rains stopped.

City Disaster Risk Reduction head Alvin Santillana said despite the heavy rains, no landslide was recorded by their team.

“The major concern really is flooding. Although there is a reported fallen tree along Salinas Drive, Lahug to which our personnel has responded to,” Santillana said.  (FREEMAN)
