Comelec wants NSO list of dead voters

AJ de la Torre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Apart from the mandatory validation of biometrics in their system, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is working on a resolution for the National Statistics Office to furnish them the names of those who are already deceased.

This is to help the Comelec eradicate the possibility of other people using names of those deceased to be able to vote, explained Comelec Cebu Provincial Supervisor Marco Lionel Castillano.

Last July 1, the Comelec started accepting voters for the mandatory validation of biometrics in their system. This is done to prevent double registration by some voters.

But Castillano said that the validation is aimed for the 2016 national elections following Republic Act 10367 that says voters whose biometrics have not been validated in their system would not be able to vote in the national elections.

The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections this coming October would be going back to manual election which concern includes the use of names of the deceased to add another vote.

Further, Castillano reminded the public that the registration of voters for the coming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataang elections would be this coming July 22.

For those have already registered but still have incomplete biometrics in the system of the Comelec like the digital picture, signature and thumb mark, the validation would be until 2015 but may temporarily stop prior to the October elections.  (FREEMAN)
