AJ de la Torre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Hundreds were stranded while six families were displaced in Daanbantayan town after Tropical Storm Gorio hit the Northern towns of Cebu over the weekend.

But there were no casualties or injuries according to the report of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Neil Sanchez.

Heavy downpour caused a flash flood in Daanbantayan that destroyed houses along the riverbank in Sitio Suba, Barangay Talisay. Damage is pegged at P60,000.

The Philippine Coast Guard in Central Visayas also reported that as of June 30, 20 vessels were not allowed to sail from northern Cebu ports.

As a result, around 2,959 passengers were stranded.

During his first day of office yesterday, Davide visited the office of PDRRMC and stressed the importance of strengthening risk reduction plans.

He also highlighted this during his inaugural speech last Sunday.

Davide instructed Sanchez yesterday to submit to his office his recommended risk reduction programs as well as a list of equipment needed to implement these programs. (FREEMAN)
