Magpale to continue scholarship program

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - In addition to the Capitol payables before the new administration assumes office on June 30 is the P425,000 due for the scholarship program at the St. Theresa’s College.

The scholarship program was initiated by suspended Governor Gwendolyn Garcia in 2010 in partnership with the STC Alumni Foundation, Inc.

Foundation president Marissa Fernan brought the billing last Friday to the office of acting Governor Agnes Magpale.

Unlike the other payables, Magpale is eager to pay the dues having found the documentation in order.

“I think it’s very laudable, basta anything sa education wa man mi . . . pagtan-aw sa papeles okay man so I asked the treasurer to pay,” Magpale said.

The amount of P425,000 covers the payment for more than ten scholars from 2011 to 2013.

Magpale said the good programs under Garcia’s administration, such as in education, will be continued.

“I want to emphasize nga ang mga maayong programa minus the abuses ba nga gigamit atong ipadayun. (I want to emphasize that the good programs, minus the abuses, we will continue),” Magpale added.

Magpale is also continuing the scholarship program for high school valedictorians and salutatorians started by Garcia.

The Provincial Board earlier authorized Magpale to execute and sign, for and on behalf of the Province of Cebu, a memorandum of agreement for the program between the Development Bank of the Philippines, Cebu Technological University and Cebu Normal University.

The program intends to provide financial and other valuable assistance to its qualified and deserving high school valedictorians and salutatorians.

The scholarship for valedictorians and salutatorians is separate from the Cebu Tertiary Education and Assistance Program (CTEAP) of the Cebu Provincial Government.

Garcia started CTEAP in 2004 for the top 20 honor students who graduate from public high schools in the different towns and cities of Cebu Province.

Like the valedictorians and salutatorians, those who qualify as scholars will receive an allowance of P1,000 a month and can enroll in education, engineering and computer related courses in CNU and CTU.  (FREEMAN)
