Capitol HS scholarship programs to continue

CEBU, Philippines - The Province of Cebu under the management of acting Governor Agnes Magpale is continuing the scholarship program for high school valedictorians and salutatorians started by suspended Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

The Provincial Board has authorized Magpale to execute and sign, for and on behalf of the Province of Cebu, a memorandum of agreement for the program between the Development Bank of the Philippines, Cebu Technological University and Cebu Normal University.

The program intends to provide financial and other valuable assistance to its qualified and deserving high school valedictorians and salutatorians.

The scholarship for valedictorians and salutatorians is separate from the Cebu Tertiary Education and Assistance Program (CTEAP) of the Cebu Provincial Government.

CTEAP was started by Garcia in 2004 for the top 20 honor students who graduate from public high schools in the different towns and cities of Cebu Province.

Like the valedictorians and salutatorians, those who qualify as scholars will receive an allowance of P1,000 a month and can enroll in education, engineering and computer related courses in CNU and CTU.

Meanwhile, the PB also authorized Magpale to sign the employment contract with Student Employees of the Province of Cebu under the Special Program for Employment of Students as mandated by law.

The students will be paid in cash 60 percent of their salary or wage at least equal to the applicable minimum wage in a certain area.

The Capitol also pays other compensation benefits such as overtime pay, allowances and incentives earned by the student-employees for the duration of the contract.

The student-employees shall bind themselves to perform tasks and duties assigned to them and strictly adhere and observe the rules and regulations imposed by the employer.  (FREEMAN)
