Rama welcomes design of 3rd bridge

Jessa Agua - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama welcomed the report on the design of the third bridge to span the Mactan Channel created by urban planners from the private sector.

“I would have wanted the academe to make the design as I mentioned earlier,” Rama told reporters, adding that he is pleased with the initiative from the private sector.

A report recently came out on the third bridge design by architect Joseph Michael Espina from the Movement for a Livable Cebu, a civil society advocacy group composed of professionals.

Espina is also the dean of University of San Carlos college of Fine Arts and Architecture.

The design will have the third bridge connect Cebu mainland and Cordova town via South Road Properties passing through adjacent Shell Island.

Rama then said state architects and engineers will look into the design making it a joint effort of private and public sectors.

“I have also instructed the city administrator to look into the design,” the mayor said.

The mayor has been openly discussing about the possibility of having a third bridge to divert traffic flow from Mandaue and the north district of Cebu City going to Mactan Island, specifically the Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Should the proposed third bridge push through, there will be a positive domino effect especially boosting the south district of Cebu City and Cordova town, he said.  (FREEMAN)
