Vendors to vacate lot in Carbon when project construction starts

Rene U. Borromeo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The more than 300 vendors occupying the lot where the Unit II Carbon Market is to be constructed have assured to cooperate with the city government as soon as the project construction starts.

Cebu City market administrator Raquel Arce said the vendors made the assurance during her meeting with them. According to Arce, the vendors promised to vacate the place immediately as soon as the construction will start.

They even promised to voluntarily demolish their makeshift stalls to give way for the project.

Arce met with the vendors yesterday to inform them in advance that they will be relocated to the nearby Quezon Boulevard and to assure them that nobody will be displaced.

“Ako sila nga gipasaligan nga walay mawad-an og panginabuhian kanila apan kon dagko sila og lugar karon diha sa dapit sa nasunog nga Unit II, adto sa ilang balhinan gagmay na lang ang ilang pwesto,” the market administrator said.

The vendors were reportedly happy about the project because they will also benefit from it.

â€œNalipay gani sila kon masugdan na da-yon ang pagtukod sa building kay sila man gihapon ang mookopar unya,” Arce said.

Mayor Michael Rama earlier terminated the city government’s contract with Young Builders Corporation (YBC) as winning bidder for the reconstruction of Unit II Carbon Market, and awarded the project to Geety Development Corporation.

Rama’s reason in terminating the contract with YBC was that the latter’s alleged abandonment and undue delay in the implementation of the contract.

YBC officials said the mayor’s action was illegal and threatened to sue the city government. — (FREEMAN)
