Ma gets bullet meant for son

Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A woman is now in critical condition after the bullet intended for her son hit her in the neck yesterday in their house in Sitio Ubca, Barangay Quiot.

Fe Cansancio, 46, is now fighting for her life at the hospital while her son Jonas Cansancio, 26, was left unscathed by the attack from an unidentified man.

SPO1 Victor Ruel Ayuman of the Homicide Section said Fe was inside their house around 11 a.m. when a man wearing a snow cap came looking for Jonas.

“Niana pa daw ang suspek, ‘nang, naa si Jonas?’ Nitubag sad ang babaye og ‘oo, naa’,” Ayuman narrated.

Fe then woke up Jonas who was sleeping in the living room.

Jonas looked out the window to see who was looking for him but as soon as he saw the man apparently cocking a gun, he hastily hid himself inside the house.

The man chased Jonas and shot at him but missed, hitting Fe in the left cheek with the slug exiting from the right side of her neck.

The assailant fled while the victim was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center.

The assailant reportedly flagged down a motorcycle-for-hire and disembarked at the corner of Tres de Abril and F. Llamas streets.  He was described about 20 years old, 5’5” tall, and slim.

Illegal drugs could be behind the attack, said Ayuman.

Jonas, Ayuman said, admitted to selling illegal drugs before.

“Pero dugay na kuno ‘to. Niundang na daw siya karon,” the policeman said.

Police are now looking for the assailant, whose face Jonas can allegedly recall.   (FREEMAN)
