Councilors suspect City Hall supply of tires are fake

Rene U. Borromeo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City councilors strongly believe that the tires supplied to City Hall are fake.

Councilor Noel Eleuterio Wenceslao observed that the tires purchased by the city government through the Bids and Awards Committee are much cheaper compared to the original.

Two of City Hall’s newly-purchased tires exploded last December, weeks after these were installed to the vehicles of Councilors Alvin Arcilla and Wenceslao.

The exploded tires were inspected yesterday by General Service Office (GSO) head Rolando Ardoza.

Ardoza said the city bought 120 pieces of Pirelli-brand tires and 160 pieces of Falken-brand tires.

Wenceslao doubted that the tires were not original after two of its kind exploded even if the vehicles were just parked. He said it is impossible that Pirelli tires are only sold at P2,200 each while Falken was bought at P2,618 each.

“Tan-awa ra gud ninyo ang presyo sa original nga ligid nga Falken ug Pirelli mahal kaayo kining maong matang sa ligid,” Arcilla said.

According to Wenceslao, he also discovered that the tires bought by City Hall were just four-ply rating.

Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. suggested banning the supplier from participating in future biddings. But Ardoza and his assistant chief Rene Plarizan wanted to give the supplier the opportunity to explain.

â€œKining klaseha sa mga ligid mao man ni ang gigamit sa mga police vehicles wala man sila mangreklamo (These types of tires were the ones being used by the police but they are not complaining),” Ardoza said.

Councilor Margarita “Margot” Osmeña said the City Council is very much concern about it because aside from  Wenceslao and Arcilla, Councilor Nida Cabrera is also complaining about it. — (FREEMAN)
