5 San Rem students to join ICT contest
CEBU, Philippines - The municipality of San Remigio in northern Cebu has picked five students to represent Central Visayas in a national competition related to Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
Four out of 40 Tech Age Girl (TAG) applicants who made it to the finals are from San Remigio National High School while the fifth successful applicant is from St. Louise de Marillac College in Bogo City but also a native of San Remigio.
They shall take a chance to compete with other participants nationwide during the Bootcamp Conference to be held in PLDT Innolab, Mandaluyong City which started yesterday until January 30 this year.
The four lucky TAG finalists from San Remigio National High School are Joanna Carol Layese, Corazon Misa, Jinky Pedroza and Shayna Rovi Nalzaro while the student from St. Louise is Rialyn Mantos.
TAG is a pet project of San Remigio Community eCenter (CeC) in partnership with Philippine Community eCenter Network (PhilCeCnet) and International Research and Exchange Board (IREC) under the Global Connection and Exchange (GCE) program duly funded by the US Department of State.
TAG activities started in September 2012 subsequently after the orientation and recruitment stage. Its target participants were those teenagers at high school level and out of school youth.
Before they could become TAG finalists, the participants had to undergo various applications in ICT training such as computer basics, word processing, excel, power point presentation, windows live movie maker, photo editing, and Picasa application.
They were also taught on Google tools, internet basic, as well as the good courtesy in email, uploading files in the internet, blogging, including lessons on plagiarism.
Aside from the productive inputs on ICT, the TAG project also aims to mold the youth to become a good leader in the community where training on leadership and team building is also a major input.
The Bootcamp Conference participated in by the five TAG finalists will be the final round of selecting a TAG national winner, which during the conference, all TAG participants will undergo intensive training on ICT and leadership, and have the opportunity to meet great women leaders in the country.
The national winner will be entitled to experience internship in a big company and shall receive various awards and surprises.
In Central Visayas, only San Remigio, Cebu availed of the TAG Project under the Global Connection and Exchange (GCE) program. —/MBG (FREEMAN)
