DENR reminds public on proper waste disposal during Sinulog

AJ de la Torre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is again reminding the public that the Sinulog festivity is not an exemption on waste segregation.

Ed Llamedo, public information officer of DENR-7, said that time and again they have been reminding the public to segregate and throw their trash in the proper place.

However, Llamedo said that proper segregation has always been a challenge since some still has no sense of segregation.

Llamedo said that since the Sinulog celebration is flocked by millions of people, the amount of trash is tripled, which makes it a critical time.

He said that plastic cups, bottles and bags are those that cause clogging in drainages that creates a bigger problem during the rainy season since it is accumulated.

With this, Llamedo said that they are reminding the public to take part in the efforts of the local government units which they have also reminded to put up waste receptacles.

If there are no trash bins around, he advises the public to bring with them their paper and plastic wastes at home instead of throwing it in the streets.

He said that they are also asking business establishments to put up waste receptacles and if they can possibly shift from using other means than plastic bags and containers in their products.

Llamedo said that it would be best to put up the receptacles on Friday,  December 18 since celebrations start by Saturday until the grand celebration on Sunday.

In the previous years, Llamedo said that they appreciate the participation of business establishments in their call for waste segregation as well as the local government units that have religiously observed waste segregation. —FPL (FREEMAN)
