Sitoy slams giving of swertres tips on air

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) has denounced the giving of swertres tips in radio programs as they also commended the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) for making the Camotes Group of Islands an illegal gambling free-zone.

In sponsoring a resolution, PB Member Arleigh Jay Sitoy said there are radio programs that provide swertres tips to entice listeners avidly to patronize their programs.

Although he did not mention any particular program, Sitoy said that gambling in any form is an evil that undermines the values of the citizen.

“This august body desires to eradicate gambling as a culture that impact on the standard of living of the wage earners,” Sitoy said.

Sitoy said that the effort of the CPPO to curb illegal gambling in Camotes  Island is laudable.

“Amidst the difficult task, we must acknowledge with encouragement their valuable achievement,” Sitoy said.

Sitoy said that the ardent bettors belong to the low income group hoping for a windfall gain.

Earlier, the Mandaue City Police, school officials, and students in the city agreed, through a covenant, to campaign against all forms of illegal gambling.

Signatories to the agreement were Mandaue City Police Office headed by Police Senior Superintendent Petronelli Baldebrin and the College of Criminology of the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu-Mandaue Campus.

Baldebrin said the police need the help of everyone in the community to stop illegal gambling.

Last week, Baldebrin and the 27 barangay captains in the city signed a covenant against illegal gambling.

This is also in compliance with the expanded one-strike policy of the Philippine National Police.

Under the expanded policy, a police station commander will be relieved if another PNP unit confirms the existence of illegal gambling or the presence of fugitives in his area of jurisdiction. —/MIT (FREEMAN)
