IBP mulls candidates’ forum

CEBU, Philippines - The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu City chapter is holding a debate for aspiring candidates in the 2013 elections.

Lawyer Earl Bonachita, IBP Cebu City chapter president, said his chapter has decided to sponsor the debate next year.

“This will be an interactive type. The forum is only limited to the candidates of the City of  Cebu,” he said.

Bonachita said this is to educate the voters and help them choose the best candidates. The candidates will be given the chance to present their platforms of government. The forum is expected to be held in a school where a good number of people will be accommodated. It is tentatively scheduled on January.

IBP Cebu Province chapter president Ferdinand Pepito said his chapter is also in the process of organizing a debate for the provincial candidates.

“Yes, we are in the process of organizing a debate in the province and city level. Actually it is a joint undertaking with the city chapter and various law schools and organizations,” he said.

He however refused to give further details on the preparation saying it is still premature at this time.

“I think it is premature for us to discuss about the debate coz we are still in the initial stage of organizing it. I promise to call you once everything is in place.  We don’t even know yet if the candidates will agree and participate,” he said.

Cebu City South District Rep. Tomas Osmeña however told The FREEMAN that there is no need for a debate.

“The People have seen what I have done. He will just talk and talk and claim everything like the SRP and how he made me mayor etc. He needs attention because his pulong-pulong doesn’t work,” Osmeña said.— (FREEMAN)
