UV-Toledo tops in NAT 2012 School ranks 1st among seven private schools in Toledo

CEBU, Philippines - The University of the Visayas Toledo Campus (UV-Toledo) ranked first among seven private schools and placed third among all the secondary schools in the Division of Toledo City in the 2012 National Achievement Test (NAT).

UV–Toledo posted an overall test result of 60.49% along with Matab-ang National High School at 71.97% and Awihao National High School at 61.37%.

Other schools that took the NAT last March include General Climaco National High School, Bato National High School,  Bu-nga National High School, Luray II National High School, Leaton School, Media Once National High School, Consolatrix College, Don Andres Soriano National High School, West Bay Learning Center, Toledo National Vocational School, Cantabaco National High School, Magdugo National High School and De La Salle ASMC.

NAT is designed to determine the students’ academic strengths and weaknesses through the five key major subjects namely Mathematics, Science, English, Filipino, HeKasi (Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika) in elementary and Araling Panlipunan in high school.

According to the Department of Education, the examination ratings obtained from the exam serve as tools to measure the schools’ competency and effectiveness as well as the students’ aptitude and mastery towards the basic learning areas.

NAT is administered by DepEd through the National Educational Testing and Research Center (NETRC) which heads on research and assessment of the education provided for the youth, specifically in the Basic Education.

Jorge Gorrero, officer-in-charge principal of UV–Toledo, said the university takes pride of such achievement of topping the annual exam among the private schools in the city for four consecutive years.

He added that among all the secondary schools in the entire division, UV–Toledo  increased to four ranks higher compared than its last year’s performance.

Topping the NAT led to the increase in enrolment and higher level of trust on the school’s educational orientation, he said.

UV–Toledo has 153 4th year high school students who took the NAT exam.

As soon as the school year starts, Gorrero said that the university devoted time to review for the national exam to prepare its students.

UV – Toledo Campus Executive Dean Dr. Camila Caparida, on the other hand, commended the commitment of faculty members and the diligence of the students of the university.

She noted that the school will strive to sustain its achievement in the annual examination in the coming years.

Meanwhile, UV Executive Vice President Jose “Dodong” Gullas expressed pride and happiness on the attainment of one of the university’s satellite schools.

He added that the university, which is founded by the late Don Vicente A. Gullas, is aimed to establish satellite schools in the Province of Cebu to enable the poor to go to school and be educated.

“If I have to follow the old man, UV is known to produce kings and queens who don’t have to be crowned but shall be royal just the same and that eventually our graduates can find a place in the sun where they can be very happy,” he told The FREEMAN.  — (FREEMAN)
