Guadalupe-Kalunasan road now open

- The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The road that links barangays Guadalupe and Kalunasan was opened to motorists in a simple ceremony yesterday.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama led the ribbon-cutting that signaled the opening of the P6.3 million road project undertaken by Goldfin Construction.

The construction of the road was started during the time of then mayor and now Rep. Tomas Osmeña.

Rama decided to finish the project because he knows it will help solve the traffic congestion along M. Velez Street to Escario Street.

Vehicles going to Lahug and other northern barangays can pass through the newly-completed road without passing the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Central Office allocated P28 million for the widening of M. Velez Street and Don Gil Garcia Street, but until now the project is not completed.

The newly-constructed road has access at Singson Village in Guadalupe. Vehicles bound for Lahug will pass through a bridge then proceed to Obedience Street in Barangay Kalunasan.

From Kalunasan, motorists will pass near the entrance of Beverly Hills, then to Sitio Sudlon in Barangay Lahug and exit to Gorordo Avenue.

It was foreseen that once the Guadalupe-Kalunasan road is opened to motorists, it will cause heavy traffic along Gorordo Avenue and the corner of Sitio Sudlon in Lahug.

This prompted Osmeña to propose the construction of flyover projects in the place as well as at the corner of Salinas Drive and Gorordo Avenue.

However, this was strongly opposed by some groups and the project was put on hold. /MBG (FREEMAN)
