Police sue son of ex-jail official for parricide

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Police Office filed yesterday a criminal complaint for parricide against the son of a retired jail official who was shot dead at his house in Barangay Kamputhaw last Tuesday.

The police earlier arrested Glenn Niñeza, 36, after at least four of their neighbors identified him as the last person who entered and went out of the house before his father, Simplicio, Sr., was found dead.

Glenn was also found positive of gun powder residue after he was subjected to a paraffin test following his arrest. Glenn denied killing his father.

“I love my father so much though we have a little misunderstanding I can’t afford to kill him,” Glenn told reporters yesterday.

He signed a waiver of detention to avail of a preliminary investigation. State Prosecutor Ernesto Narido who conducted the inquest proceeding gave Glenn 10 days to submit his counter-affidavit.

Glenn said he was at his live-in partner’s house in Cabantan when his father was shot dead last Tuesday afternoon. But at least four of his neighbors told the police that Glenn was the last person they saw entering the victim’s house before the shooting happened.

Based on the accounts of the neighbors, the suspect was also the last person seen leaving the house before the victim was found dead. Based on the circumstantial evidence Glenn was invited for questioning and was eventually placed under arrest.

He was later found positive of gun powder residue based on the result of the paraffin test conducted by the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory-7.

Senior Inspector Jul Mohammad Jamiri, chief of the homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said that the result of the paraffin test will corroborate the testimonies of the four witnesses.

 “Dako ni’ng tabang sa amoa kay makahatag ni’g weight sa kaso nga among gi-file (This will help us because it gives weight to the case that we filed),” Jamiri said.

The result would show that Glenn indeed fired a gun. Glenn’s mother, Cres, could not believe her husband was killed by their own son.

“Ako mismo dili gyud ko katuo kay gadako nang bataa nga mahadlukon kay gikan sa seminary (I myself could not believe it because he grew up in a seminary),” Cres said.

She however admitted that Glenn has somehow changed after he started using illegal drugs. She vowed to pursue the case against her own son.

Meanwhile, the remains of Simplicio will be brought to Bohol Thursday next week where the couple is a native of. Simplicio will be buried next Friday.  (FREEMAN)
