CEBU, Philippines - A woman is now in the Cebu City Medical Center after she injured herself trying to escape from the Cebu City Jail late yesterday afternoon.
Emelita Nalam, 35, a mother of five, was arrested for physical injury and possession of a deadly weapon last Thursday evening after she was caught with a knife near an uptown mall in Barangay Lahug.
Early Thursday morning, Nalam got into a fight with a female neighbor whom she allegedly tried to choke.
The neighbor, fearing for her safety, reported the incident to the Mabolo Police Station.
Later that evening, the neighbor told the police that she saw Nalam waiting for her outside the mall acting suspiciously.
PO1 Venerando Bacalso of Mabolo Police Station responded to the area and arrested Nalam who was found bringing a kitchen knife.
The suspect was temporarily detained at the Mabolo Police Station detention cell that evening.
Bacalso said he was about to turn over Nalam to the Cebu City Jail Female dormitory around 4 p.m. yesterday when Nalam tried to escape.
He said they were walking towards the gate of the Cebu City Jail female dormitory when Nalam suddenly turned ran towards the main gate of the jail.
But before she could get there Nalam stumbled on a ramp and hit her head on the pavement, suffering a minor cut to her head.
Paramedics of the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation responded to the incident and took Nalam to the CCMC.
Bacalso said that he still has to wait for his superior, Chief Insp. Sara Jean Recla, for further instructions on the situation of Nalam.
The Cebu City Jail Management Female Dormitory headed by Jail Warden Corazon Noel ordered the Mabolo Police Station to come up with a medical certificate on Nalam’s condition.
Nalam, who is still currently being treated at the hospital, will eventually be taken to the jail and will face sanctions for trying to escape. —/BRP (FREEMAN)
